Today it seems like "mean mugging" is being practiced and taught in our culture. What happened to just smiling at each other? Why not wave at your neighbor?
I work with the public every day and common courtesy...well, it isn't...common that is. Just this morning I was standing in line at a store and the "gentleman" behind me didn't make eye contact, did not smile, he just stood behind me...belching. I kid you not. The lady in front of me would glance up occasionally and offer a sheepish grin. Of course, her extreme false lashes and the inch of goo over her eyes was probably weighing her down...
I am not judging the souls of these fellow humans based on a single encounter. I am just reporting that some things, like good manners, need to come back in style. Quickly. Please. Below you will find my modern rules about expression based on this simple rule from President Washington.
