Words Matter: Standard

If you have more than one standard, you have no standards at all.

As a 50-something woman, some days I struggle to understand the world around me. This word, standard, is one of the things that should be easy to comprehend. If it is a "standard" then, that is the end of discussion. It is the measure by which all individuals are measured in a given circumstance.
If a school says their standard is a 1400 SAT score, then that's what it is. The end.
If an atheltic team is for women, then it is not for boys in skirts. The end.
If a navy seal needs to be able to carry a rucksack weighing 100 pounds a mile in under 5 minutes then any person who cannot meet that criteria is disqualified from being a seal. The end.
If individuals who are not citizens of a country wish to enter said country, those individuals need to follow the rules, aka standards, of that country or face the consequences of breaking those rules.
I hope and I literally pray that we will come to our senses and start holding ourselves accountable to a consistently higher standard. Either there is a standard or their isn't. Multiple "standards" cannot be tolerated in civil society.
